Essential Skills

This project undertaken on behalf of DE Essential Skills Branch, evaluates the suitability of a revised model of assessment for Essential Skills Communication and Application of Number at levels 1 and 2 only. The project uses an extended Desk Top Task assessment taken under controlled conditions at the end of a learner’s programme, in lieu of an Action Based Activity which could be taken over a number of weeks. This project gives tutors the opportunity to develop assessments in a context suitable for a wide range of learners.

The project is currently operating in North West Regional College with approximately 2000 learners in a number of settings – full-time, part-time, training, work based and prison based learners. The project commenced in September 2010 and will report on findings in September 2011.
