Entry Level Mathematics for Life

Revision of Course File materials

Dear Colleague,

At the agreement trial for Mathematics for Life, several suggestions were made for improvements to the course. In response to these suggestions, the following actions are proposed:

  1. The subject content will be mapped into the corresponding Topic Areas so that teachers can more easily decide which Course File worksheets are most appropriate for their pupils;
  2. The Course File worksheets will be mapped into this revised subject content so that teachers can more accurately assess the level at which their pupils are working;
  3. Course File materials will be placed on the CCEA website so that individual worksheets can be adapted to suit individual pupils.

To carry out the first two actions, I propose to recruit a small team of teachers who are currently teaching the Mathematics for Life course. When the work is completed it may be found that there are some gaps in the coverage of the subject content; I would hope that members of the team would be able to devise worksheets to fill these gaps.

Payment to members of the team will be comparable to that paid to examiners for attendance at standardising meetings; this is currently £90 per day. The total fee to be paid will be negotiated with the members of the team before the work commences.

When this work has been completed, the revised specification and Course File materials will be placed on the CCEA website; I would hope that this can be done by September 2006

If you are interested in being part of the team, or if you have a colleague or colleagues teaching the course who would be interested, please write to me:

When writing to me, please let me know at which centre you teach, your experience of teaching mathematics at Entry Level, and a brief summary of your reasons for wanting to join the team. Selection of team members will be on the basis of the information given.

Please reply by Friday 10 February. I will notify all respondents of the outcome by Friday 17 February and will arrange the first meeting of the team as soon afterwards as possible.
