Withdrawal of recently issued Notes for Guidance for A level Physics
The recently issued Notes for Guidance contain a number of errors and a revised set of Notes for Guidance will be issued shortly. At the same time as you receive the revised copy you will be asked to return any copy of the Notes in your possession to avoid any future confusion.
For your information the main errors are detailed below.
Page 2 Photodetection
“densities” in the second last line should read “intensities”
Sensitivity
“increase” in the third last line should read “decrease”
Page 3 Resolving Power
The formula should read sin θ = λ/D, not sin θ = λD
Acuity
This heading and the first paragraph under this heading should not have been included.
“0.5 minute (i.e. about 1.5 x 10 4 radian)” should read “0.009 degrees”
Page 5 Optical Imaging
The phrase “but questions will not be set on these aspects” at the end of the second last sentence should have been deleted.
Page 6 Ultrasonic scanning
In the third paragraph “1ms” should read “1 μs”
Page 13 The following paragraph should have been added:
“ Extension of quark model to include charm, topness and bottomness
Some of the properties of these three quarks are listed below
Flavour |
Charge e |
Baryon number B |
Strangeness S

The most important feature of the quark model is that all mesons and baryons can be understood in terms of appropriate combinations of quarks, and all matter can be expressed in terms of quarks and leptons.”
There some other typographical errors which will be also corrected in the revised version.
CCEA apologises for any confusion caused by the issue of this document and will endeavour to have a corrected version with you as soon as possible.
