Circular

S/IF/65/06 August 2006

TO: Principals of Post-Primary Schools and Directors of Institutes of Further and Higher Education

FOR CIRCULATION TO: The Head of the Mathematics Department

GCSE Mathematics

Coursework

Mathematics Departments were circulated last May with a consultation pro-forma relating to the place of coursework within GCSE Mathematics. The response to the consultation was high with over 140 faxback forms returned. Thank you to all those who responded.

The feedback was overwhelmingly in favour of the removal of coursework with well over 90% of respondents confirming that all aspects of Mathematics could be assessed by external examination. In the light of the responses we will be removing coursework from the 2-tier Mathematics specification from 2007 (first teaching). We are currently working with colleagues in the other regulatory authorities and CGSE awarding bodies to ensure that the elements of mathematics currently assessed by coursework will be included within the examination papers for 2008.

As Summer 2009 will be the last time that the current 3-tier Mathematics will be examined, coursework will continue to be an element of this specification.
