Role of CCEA in the Transfer Procedure

CCEA is one of the three bodies involved in the Transfer Procedure in Northern Ireland. The other two are the Department of Education (DE) and the Education and Library Boards (ELBs).

DE is responsible for the overall policy governing the operation of the Transfer Procedure arrangements in which the Transfer Tests play an important part. It decides on the subjects to be tested, the content of the Programmes of Study on which the Transfer Test questions are based, the number of marks per subject, the time allowed, the format of the papers and the dates of the tests. Grades are awarded on the basis that:

  • Grade A is awarded to the top 25% of the entire age group;
  • Grade B1 to the next 5%;
  • Grade B2 to the next 5%;
  • Grade C1 to the next 5%;
  • Grade C2 to the next 5%;
  • Grade D awarded to the balance.

CCEA is responsible for developing and setting the tests, arranging for their conduct, distributing test papers to schools, marking the papers, determining the grades and issuing test results to the ELBs.

ELBs are responsible for issuing results to parents and the processing of the Transfer Report forms. ELBs inform parents by letter of the school to which their child will be admitted.
