At both Foundation and Higher Tier, students must sit two examinations: Paper 1 and Paper 2. The exams (combined) account for 75 percent of the final award. Each paper is worth 37.5 percent.
The Foundation Tier papers last one hour fifteen minutes each. The Higher Tier papers last 1 hour 45 minutes each. All papers present students with structured questions. Some of these questions offer students opportunities to respond in extended prose.
The number of questions students must answer in each paper varies from year to year.
