GCSE in Biology
Through their work in GCSE Biology, students begin to understand major scientific ideas and to recognise their environmental, technological, ethical, cultural and social significance.
Students learn how biological concepts have been used in industry, business and medicine to contribute to our quality of life. Students also learn about the potentially harmful and controversial ways biological concepts can be used to make our lives more convenient.
Our GCSE Biology course encourages students to question and discuss biology-based issues that affect their lives, the society in which they live and the world as a whole. Students plan and carry out a range of investigations, analyse information, draw conclusions and make decisions. This approach helps our students develop a questioning mind, self-confidence and an ability to express opinions based on knowledge.
GCSE Biology also prepares students for the study of Biology and related courses at GCE Advanced Level, Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced VCE Level.
Revised GCSE
In consultation with the regulator, QCA, we have decided to defer the revision of our GCSE specifications for:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Science Double Award
We have deferred revision of these science specifications as it has become clear that further development work is required with a particular focus on controlled assessment, which will involve wider consultation with the science community.
We will continue working with the regulator and other partners with the aim of revising our GCSE science specifications in line with the other awarding bodies in England and Wales.
Therefore, as our GCSE Science qualifications will remain unchanged for the foreseeable future, you should continue to base your courses on our existing specifications. They will continue to be fully supported by our locally-based team available to provide you with expert advice and guidance.
