Students must complete one internal assessment module at AS Level (Module AS 3) and one internal assessment module at A2 Level (Module A2 3). Coursework is assessed by teachers but we moderate it.

The tables below give more information on each coursework module:

AS 3

Coursework Tasks Description Assessment Weighting (%)

Students must carry out two practical tasks.

The practical tasks must involve experiments that test a scientific prediction. Teachers are free to devise their own practical work, but this must be relevant to the specification and approved by us.

Students are assessed in their ability to:

  • implement a sequence of instructions;
  • record and communicate;
  • interpret results; and
  • evaluate the design of the practical task.

Students are not assessed on their ability to plan an investigation in this module.

A2 3

Coursework Tasks Description Assessment Weighting (%)

Students plan and carry out an investigative practical task that tests a simple scientific hypothesis.

Students must design their own investigation and are assessed in the following skill areas:

A Planning;

B Implementing and Recording; and

C Analysis and Interpretation.

Students must work independently with minimal guidance.

Teachers must inform students at the beginning of the course that their class practical work may be assessed for examination purposes. Students also need to be informed when a particular skill area is being assessed.

It is not necessary to assess all students at the same time nor when carrying out the same experiment or investigation. However, when assessments are being made during group activity, teachers must make sure they identify the contribution made by the individual student being assessed.
