GCSE Business Studies aims to develop a range of abilities. These include the pupil's ability to:

  • use relevant terminology, methods and concepts;
  • recognise the strengths and limitations of ideas;
  • distinguish between fact and opinion in order to build arguments and make judgements; and
  • evaluate qualitative and quantitative data.

The course is divided into five areas of study:

  • Business (which includes business aims, business types and business organisations);
  • Human Resources;
  • Production;
  • Marketing; and
  • Finance and Accounting

Teachers do not have to deliver the content in this order.

Students can take GCSE Business Studies at either the Foundation Tier or Higher Tier.

Foundation Tier is targeted at students who wish to achieve a grade from C-G. It is not possible for a student to be awarded a grade A*-B if he/she sits the Foundation Tier papers.

Higher Tier is targeted at students who wish to achieve a grade from A*-D (E).

More information about this course, including details on the five areas of study and the major topics included in each, is available in the full specification.
