Students must complete six examinations: three at AS and three at A2. These are outlined in the table below:

AS 1: Basic Concepts in Physical and Inorganic Chemistry At both AS 1 and AS 2, students sit a written paper. Section A contains 10 multiple choice questions and Section B contains a number of structured questions. 1½ hours 35% of AS 17.5% of AL January & Summer
AS 2: Further Physical and Inorganic Chemistry and Introduction to Organic Chemistry
AS 3: Internal Assessment
This unit is timetabled and is taken by students under controlled conditions. The papers will be marked by the centres to a CCEA-supplied mark scheme. Section A consists of two practical tasks. Section B has a planning exercise and a number of other questions that test knowledge and practical techniques, observations, and calculations.   30% of AS 15% of AL  
A2 1: Periodic Trends and Further Organic, Physical and Inorganic Chemistry At both A2 1 and A2 2, students sit a written paper. Section A contains 10 multiple choice questions and Section B contains a number of structured questions. 2 hour 20% of AL January & Summer
A2 2: Analytical, Transition Metals, Electrochemistry and Further Organic Chemistry 2 hours 20% of AL Summer only
A2 3: Internal Assessment: Practical Examination Practical exam consisting of a planning exercise and practical exercises. Internally assessed. 2½ hours 10% of AL Summer only
