Talking and Listening Individual Set Assignments - "Myself"
For the assignment “Myself”, CCEA will require audio-taped evidence from six candidates for moderation purposes. This task could take the form of an interview or a presentation and could be on the topic used as one of the externally set written assignments. The candidate may talk on one of a wide range of topics, eg hobbies, part-time work, friends, personal experiences, pets etc. This is the only task which needs to be recorded on audio tape.
Candidate 1 (mark: 14/20)
The candidate has obviously prepared very well for this assignment and one gets the impression that she has her “notes” in front of her to give her reassurance. Throughout the talk the teacher offers an appropriate level of support and encouragement. The candidate has wisely opted to speak about a recent and very enjoyable personal experience. She has selected a range of vocabulary suited to the content of the talk and the members of the audience are able to get a clear flavour of the trip.
The candidate is happy to share feelings and begins to convey enthusiasm.
Overall this candidate gives the audience a sustained insight into the events of an important personal experience.
Candidate 2 (mark: 19/20)
This candidate responds in a very mature and enthusiastic manner. He communicates in a sustained and engaging manner. A wide range of appropriate vocabulary is used by this very competent, confident and independent speaker. Excellent listening skills are displayed and the candidate is very responsive to the teacher’s direct questioning or signs of interest.
Although this candidate is naturally confident, he obviously benefits from the regular but unobtrusive promptings of his teacher and he often provides his audience with reasons or some justification for his actions or choices. He provides some humorous asides for the teacher who clearly enjoys the discussion about pets, especially the reference to "the wee ankle biter”. This comment suggests that the speaker is relaxed and a natural communicator.
Overall this candidate has demonstrated the ability to speak, at some length on a range of subjects. He interacts with the teacher as an equal and the wider audience gets the clear impression of a young man who will be able to communicate successfully in a variety of contexts.
