GCSE Applied Science (Double Award) is worth two GCSE’s. Students are awarded two grades in the range of A*A*-GG.

The course is available at two tiers of entry: Higher Tier and Foundation Tier. Students of the Higher Tier are eligible for the award of grades A*A*-DD. Students of the Foundation Tier are eligible for the award of grades CC-GG.

The specification is made up of three units, which we’ve outlined in the table below:


Unit Context Content
1: Developing Scientific Skills Students study the importance of health and safety in the science workplace.

 

 

Students learn how to:
  • carry out standard procedures;
  • handle scientific equipment and materials;
  • record and analyse scientific data;
  • investigate living organisms and materials; and
  • analyse chemicals.
2: Science for the Needs of Society Scientists help produce materials and goods for commercial purposes such as food, medicines, clothes, building materials and household goods. Both living and non-living materials are used to manufacture more useful products.

Students learn about:
  • living organisms;
  • obtaining useful chemicals;
  • materials for making things; and
  • the importance of energy.
3: Science at Work Students explore practical skills and the roles scientists carry out in scientific workplaces. Students develop scientific skills through:
  • investigating instruments and machines;
  • monitoring living organisms; and
  • making useful chemical products.
