Entry Level Science
Our Entry Level Science award is designed for students who have not yet reached Level 3 of the Northern Ireland Curriculum at the end of Key Stage 3 and for whom GCSE and equivalent vocational qualifications are not yet deemed appropriate.
Through studying Entry Level Science, students develop an understanding of the social and economic contributions of science. They become aware that science can be used in ways that are both beneficial and detrimental to the individual, the community and the environment. Students learn about health and safety, ethical, cultural and environmental issues such as:
- the effects of smoking;
- medicine and drugs;
- fitness;
- sports injuries;
- safe practice in the laboratory;
- human reproduction;
- variation and inheritance;
- threats to wildlife;
- conserving wildlife;
- pollution;
- world energy problems; and
- non-renewable fuels.
This course prepares students for further studies in science or science-related vocational courses.
