A2: 1 Human Geography and Global Issues

Section A: Human Geography
Students must complete two of the following options:

Option A: Impact of population change

  • Natural population change
  • Migration: causes, streams and impacts
  • Population policies

Option B: Planning for sustainable settlements

  • Sustainable development
  • Urban land use and planning in relation to sustainability
  • Traffic and transport

Option C: Issues in ethnic diversity

  • The definition of ethnicity
  • The processes which create and maintain ethnic diversity
  • Ethnic conflict

Section B: Global Issues

Students study one of the following issues:
  • Air pollution including the climate change/global warming debate
  • Nuclear energy including the nuclear debate
  • Agricultural change and its impact including the GM crops debate
  • Issues in tourism including the ecotourism debate

A2: 2 Physical Geography and Decision-Making

Section A: Physical Geography Students must complete two of the following options:

Option A: Fluvial and coastal environments

  • Human demands on fluvial and coastal environments
  • River and basin management strategies
  • Coastal processes, features and management

Option B: The nature and sustainability of tropical ecosystems

  • Location and climatic characteristics of major tropical biomes
  • Ecosystem processes in the tropical rainforest environment
  • Management and sustainability within tropical ecosystems

Option C: The dynamic earth

  • Plate tectonics and resulting landforms
  • Volcanic activity and its management
  • Earthquake activity and its management

Section B: Decision-making exercise

  • Case study
  • Students are presented with a variety of resources and are asked to take on a particular role
