This is a unitised specification. Students have the opportunity to sit Unit 1 in the first year of teaching.
The Students can take GCSE History at either Foundation or Higher Tier. Foundation Tier is targeted at students who wish to achieve a grade C–G. Higher Tier is targeted at students who wish to achieve a grade A*–D.
Students must complete three units of study:
- Two Studies in Depth;
- an Outline Study; and
- an Investigative Study (controlled assessment).
Teachers must select one of the following topics for the Studies in Depth:
- Germany 1918–1941;
- Russia c1916–1941; or
- United States of America 1918–1941.
and either
- Peace, War and Neutrality: Britain, Northern Ireland and Ireland 1932-1949; or
- Changing Relationships: Britain, Northern Ireland and Ireland 1965–1985.
The Outline Study focuses on The Cold War in Europe and the World.
