At Entry Level, students must complete three study modules:

  • Family Life;
  • Diet and Health; and
  • Choice and Management of Resources.

The three study modules are described in detail in the table below:

  • The importance of developing and strengthening family relationships
Diet and Health
  • The classification, sources and functions in the body of the following nutrients:
    – protein
    – fats
    – carbohydrates
    – vitamins
    – minerals
    – water
  • Nutritional needs of family members at key stages of the life cycle
  • Energy from foods
  • Current nutritional advice and the implications for health and lifestyle
  • Planning healthy diets to meet the dietary needs of family members throughout the life cycle
  • Special diets
  • The effect of food storage, preparation and cooking on nutrients
  • Convenience foods
  • The safety of food
Choice and Management of Resources
  • Shopping
  • Factors which influence consumers’ choice of the following:
    – food; and
    – equipment relating to the storage, preparation and cooking of food
  • Information about food and equipment available to consumers
  • Legislation as a source of information and consumer protection
