What awards will be available in this specification?
The revised GCE ICT specification will be available at two levels: AS and A2. The AS can be taken as a ‘stand-alone’ qualification without progression to A2. However, to obtain the Advanced GCE qualification, students will have to complete both the AS and A2 levels.
What grades can students achieve from studying this revised specification?
Both AS and A Level qualifications will be awarded on a six-grade scale: A*, A, B, C, D and E. Students who fail to reach the minimum standard for a Grade E will be recorded as U (unclassified) and will not receive a certificate.
What will students have to study in this course?
The revised GCE ICT specification has a modular structure. Students will have to study two compulsory modules at each level. These are listed below:
AS Level
AS 1: Components of ICT
AS 2: Developing ICT Solutions
A2 Level
A2 1: Information Systems
A2 2 : Approaches to Systems Development
How will each module be weighted?
The table below highlights the weighting for each module:
Unit |
Weighting |
AS 1: Components of ICT
|
50% of AS 25% of A level |
AS 2: Developing ICT solutions |
50% of AS 25% of A level |
A2 1: Information Systems
|
25% of A level |
A2 2: Approaches to Systems Development

How many examination papers will students have to sit?
Students will have to sit two written examination papers, one at AS Level and one at A Level. Each paper will last for two hours and be set and marked by us.
How much coursework will students have to submit?
In the revised GCE ICT specification, two of the modules are coursework based: AS 2 and A2 2.
For module AS 2, students will have to complete two compulsory tasks. These tasks will be set and marked by teacher but we will moderate them.
For module A2 2, students will have to complete a project. The project will be set and marked by the teacher but we will moderate it.
Will students be able to re-sit exams or re-submit coursework?
Yes, students will be able to re-sitexams and re-submit coursework
The best result for each assessment module will count towards the final AS and A Level qualifications.
Are there any prerequisites for this course?
No, there are no specific requirements for prior learning. However, we envisage that many students will have already gained skills and, knowledge and understanding of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) through successfully completing a GCSE in ICT (either short or full course) or a GCSE in Applied ICT before embarking on this award.
