Controlled Assessment

Unit 3: Broadcast Media and Communications Task

Students must produce two broadcast media scripts from pre-released materials.

The format of this task varies each year. Students must produce two scripts: one for a 3 minute news bulletin and one for a 2 minute news package.

In the September of the year of submission of the task, we inform centres of the chosen media format (for example Radio, TV or Web) and forward relevant pre-release material for the news bulletin. Seven weeks later we provide additional materials that students must use to complete the news package.

Students have 20 hours allocated to complete this task. They must complete the 3 minute news bulletin within seven weeks of receiving the material from us. They must complete the 2 minute news package within the following five weeks. When the planning and research for the task is completed, candidates must produce the two scripts under formal supervision.

Through their work, students must show an understanding of:

  • ethics and broadcast industry guidelines;
  • legal constraints;
  • broadcast journalism deadlines;
  • broadcast journalism writing skills;
  • broadcast media formats;
  • the target audience of the chosen media; and
  • the appropriate presentational features of different media.
