Assessment

The key skills Application of Number, Communication and ICT are assessed through a combination of an externally set and marked test (or achievement of a recognised proxy qualification) and internally assessed, externally moderated evidence portfolio. To be awarded a key skill qualification, a candidate must pass both assessment components.

Achievement of portfolio and test at different levels

Candidates who achieve the two components at different levels can be awarded the qualification at the lower level achieved (for example a candidate who passes the test at level 2 but whose portfolio only meets level 1 requirements can be awarded the qualification at level 1).

Candidates who fail either component at any level will not automatically be awarded achievement at the next level down. In such cases an award at a lower level can only be made by:

  • sitting and passing the test at a lower level (or achievement of a proxy qualification for the test at that level);
  • a reassessment of the portfolio against the requirements of the lower level.

Evidence Portfolio

A portfolio is usually a file or folder in which evidence is presented for assessment. An index should be included showing where each evidence requirement has been met. The evidence requirements are described by Part B of each of the Key Skills standards documents.

Any verifiable means of showing that the candidate has met the requirements can be included in the portfolio. Usually, this will be in the form of documents but other forms of evidence such as audio / video recordings, models or photographs can be used.

Evidence does not have to come from candidates’ education and training programmes but can be drawn from any area of their life be it study, employment or leisure activities.

Portfolio evidence can be presented in English, Welsh or Irish (Gaeilge).

Tests

The external tests assess candidates’ ability to independently apply the key skills. The tests are developed centrally and administered and marked by awarding bodies. Tests are to be completed within a fixed time and under supervised conditions.

Wider key skills

There are no tests for the key skills of Improving own Learning and Performance; Problem Solving and Working with Others. These are assessed solely through a portfolio of evidence.
