Principal Moderator's Report on Coursework
(PDF), Last Updated: 15 June 2007
Students are continually assessed throughout the Entry Level course and must complete a portfolio of work. Teachers mark the portfolio and we moderate samples from each centre. The portfolio must include:
- two investigative tasks; and
- one internal assessment.
It accounts for 60 percent of the final award and must be completed during class time.
Investigative Tasks
The investigative tasks give students a chance to show their knowledge and understanding of one area of the course content. We set and mark the tasks, and each is worth nine percent of the final award.
Students must complete investigative tasks for the following components:
- Handling Data; and
- Using and Applying Mathematics.
A full list of the tasks is included in our CD Mathematics for Life Support Materials, which we distribute to all centres. Teachers can set their own investigative tasks, but we must approve these in advance.
Internal Assessment
The internal assessment is based on the worksheets drawn from the Mathematicsfor Life Support Materials and is worth 42 percent of the final award available.
Students must submit appropriate worksheets for the internal assessment. The worksheets test students on the 14 topics covered in the course. Worksheets that show the highest level of achievement across the breadth of content of the 14 topics must be included in the student’s portfolio of work. Teachers can devise their own worksheets to set the internal assessment, but they must be of equivalent standard and teachers must submit copies of the worksheets with the moderation sample. They must also indicate the topic area and level targetted.
