Examinations

Below are some useful tips for students sitting the GCSE Mathematics Two-Tier tests:

Before the Test

  • Make a list of the topics that will be on the papers.
  • For each topic:
    • write down any formulae you may need to use;
    • list the mathematical words and their meaning; and
    • make a note of the key facts you need to remember.
  • Use these summary topic notes for revision (including last-minute revision).
  • Make sure you know what formulae will be provided.
  • Familiarise yourself with the instructions on the front of the paper.
  • Check where you will be taking the test and when, and plan to arrive in good time.
  • Make sure you bring along pens, pencils, eraser, compasses, protractor and calculator (if required).

At the Start of the Test

  • Check that you have been given the correct paper.
  • Read the instructions printed on the front of the paper.
  • Enter your centre number and candidate number.

During the Test

  • Read each question carefully.
  • Underline key words and circle given information to help you answer each question.
  • We may offer method marks, so show all your work in your answer to each question.
  • When you get an answer check if:
    • you have answered the question asked;
    • your answer appears sensible;
    • you have given numerical answers to the degree of accuracy asked for; and
    • you need to include units when recording your answer.

Managing Time

  • Make a mental note of the number of questions on the paper.
  • If you get stuck on a question, move on to the next one and come back to it later.
  • When half the time is up, check how many questions you still have to complete.
  • Allow time for answering more difficult questions that may appear in the latter half of the paper.
  • Be aware that constructing or graphical questions may take longer to complete than other questions.
  • If you are running out of time, make sure you do the questions or bits of questions that you can do quickly.
  • If you finish before the time is up, check over your paper:
    • making sure you attempted all questions;
    • focusing on questions where you experienced difficulty;
    • ensuring you have correctly copied your answers into the answer spaces; and
    • checking that your working is accurate.
