GCE/GCSE Moving Image Arts
Mock Examinations January/February 2012

Following our circular in September, this is a reminder that the registration for the Moving Image Arts Mock Examinations is now available.

CCEA are running mock examinations during January and February. CCEA recommend that all centres who plan to enter candidates in the summer series take part in the mocks to give practice to candidates using the examination system and also to technicians during setup. If a centre has never run the examination before then the mock is a requirement before the centre undertakes the live examination, to ensure that all systems will run smoothly on the day.

The dates again are:

AS Level
Tuesday 24th January 2012 - 10:00am – 11:30am

A2 Level
Tuesday 31st January 2012 - 10.00am – 11:30am (Session 1)     11:45am – 12:30pm (Session 2)

The two set films for the A2 mock examination are The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari (1920 Director: Robert Wiene) and The King’s Wake (1999 Director: John McCloskey). The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari is on general release and can also be viewed at a number of sites on the internet. The King’s Wake was produced by the Nerve Centre in 1999 (www.nerve-centre.org.uk Tel: 02871 260562). Please contact Sharon Concannon at sharon@nerve-centre.org.uk or Maura McKee at m.mckee@nerve-centre.org.uk to source a copy of the film.

GCSE

Tuesday 7th February 2012 10.00 – 11.30am

This is the second mock examination for GCSE Moving Image Arts (aimed for candidates who will be sitting the Unit 3 examination in Summer 2012).

Please Note: The GCSE mock will be based on the 2011 Examination paper.

Mock Registration Process

To enter for the mock examinations teachers must register their candidates online via the website: http://www.movingimagearts.org.uk/register/. Before registering please have both the teacher and technician’s name, email address and also your centre number to hand.

Registration is now open using the above link.

The closing date for registration is Friday 13th January 2012.

Once registered, a page will display the candidates’ logins which teachers should make a note of. These numbers are NOT the pupils’ usual Candidate numbers but are instead numbers generated exclusively for use in the mock exam. These will be displayed on the web page after registration and will also be emailed to the teacher.

The teacher must then download the Teacher Instructions and Step by Step Guide booklets using the link provided. These documents will provide instructions on how to run the mock examination. The teacher must then give the Step by Step Guide booklet to the school technician as it relates to the technical set up and running of the mock examination.

Please Note:

The examination files must be downloaded by the technician the day before the examination between 9am and 12 noon to allow for testing time.

The password for use on the day will be sent by email on Tuesday 17th January 2012 to the teacher.

Moving Image Arts A2 2012

Set Texts and Mock Texts Update

We would like to confirm that the 2012 set texts for A2 Moving Image Arts will be the same as those set for 2011. The set texts for next year will therefore be:

Blade Runner: The Final Cut (1982) Dir. Ridley Scott
Psycho (1960) Dir. Alfred Hitchcock

We have taken on board feedback from teachers at support events during the year which supported the extension of set texts into a second year of teaching.

This amendment remains adherent to the requirements of the specification and the A2 set texts will continue to be reviewed annually.

We would also like to remind all teachers of the set texts for the A2 Mock Examination in January:

These are still The Cabinet of Doctor Calagari (1920) Dir. Robert Wiene and The King’s Wake (1999) Dir. John McCloskey.

The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari is on general release and can also be viewed at a number of sites on the internet.

If you wish to purchase a copy of The King’s Wake contact Sharon or Maura at The Nerve Centre and they will be happy to help - sharon@nerve-centre.org.uk, m.mckee@nerve-centre.org.uk or (028) 7126 0562.

Copyright and Consent Forms Now Available

Beginning with the 2010 series, all candidate filmmakers must complete and return three copyright forms as part of their coursework/controlled assessment. These are:

MIA-PR1
PDF 98KB

MIA-FR1
PDF 73KB

MIA-EC1
PDF 158KB

All forms are now available to candidates here, in the Support section of the microsite and via the GCSE ePortfolio.

The first form (PR1) must be completed by every performer in a production (including speaking/non-speaking cast, narrators, and voice over performers in animations, etc). It gives the filmmaker legal permission to record their performance and to reuse that performance in the film for the specified purposes.

The second form must be completed by the candidate filmmaker. It grants CCEA legal permission to display their final film on the Moving Image Arts microsite.

The last form must be completed by the candidate filmmaker in order to record and report all third-party works appearing in their film.

Please note that PR1 and FR1 are legal contracts, and so all relevant parties are encouraged to read thoroughly before signing.

More details, as well as guidance on collection and retention of these compulsory forms, are available in the Instructions to Teachers for Internally Assessed Work.

Unit 1 tasks may be submitted in Summer 2011.

Marks and work must be submitted using the e-Portfolio as per instructions received at the compulsory e-Portfolio training day at CCEA on the 29th January 2010.
It is recommended that candidates upload work into their e-Portfolio no later than one week before the submission deadline.
