AS 1: Foundation Portfolio Booklet - Stimulus For Students
(PDF), Last Updated: 12 April 2019

This specification has two internal assessment units:

  • Unit AS 1: Realist and Formalist Techniques and the Classical Hollywood – Foundation Portfolio  (60% of AS and 24% of A level)
  • Unit A2 1: Creative Production and Research – Advanced Portfolio (36% of A level)

Both units are available in the summer only.

Teachers mark both units and we moderate them.

Unit AS 1: Realist and Formalist Techniques and the Classical Hollywood – Foundation Portfolio

Students research Classical Hollywood Style, Realism and Formalism, informing the creation of a 34 minute narrative film sequence or 1 2 minute animation sequence in response to stimulus that we provide. The portfolio must include evidence of planning, research and evaluation.

We provide centres with a stimulus booklet for Unit 1, which is available to download from the microsite. The booklet provides details of the portfolio requirements, some creative and technical stimulus and guidance on how to complete and submit it.

We review the stimulus booklet every three years.

Unit A2 1: Creative Production and Research – Advanced Portfolio

Students make an independent study of a chosen film practitioner, informing the creation of an original and complete 4–7 minute narrative film or 2–3½ minute animation. The portfolio must include an illustrated essay and evidence of planning, research and evaluation.
