Controlled Assessment

Students must complete one performance of up to 10 minutes in length. This must include at least one solo and one ensemble performance piece. One of the performance pieces must be related to one of the core or optional areas of study.

Students must:

  • perform as an accompanied or unaccompanied soloist; and
  • perform an independent part as a member of an ensemble.

We do not require all members of the ensemble to be entered for assessment.

The performance is marked by a visiting assessor and is worth 30 percent of the award.

Students must also discuss their performance pieces with the visiting assessor and answer questions relating to:

  • the preparation they have done;
  • the learning processes involved;
  • aspects of the performances, including health and safety issues; and
  • (where relevant) the performance and its relationship to the chosen area of study.

The discussion lasts up to five minutes and is worth 5 percent of the award.
