Dickinson
The Poet
  • 1820 – 1866.
  • America’s best-known female poet - only seven of her two thousand poems were published during her lifetime.
  • Despite being a bright and sociable scholar in her younger days, as she grew older she became increasingly solitary.
  • She wrote letters to a wide range of people and she included many of her poems in these letters.
  • Dickinson used common language in startling ways to “distill amazing sense/From ordinary things” and from “familiar species”.
