GCSE Religious Studies

For first teaching from September 2017
A guide to changes in GCSE Grading

Our GCSE Religious Studies specification encourages students to develop an enquiring, critical and reflective approach to studying religion. Students explore and engage with important questions about belief and respond to them personally. This can enhance their spiritual, moral and cultural development, helping them to contribute to social cohesion.

There are nine externally assessed units to choose from, giving students the opportunity to explore different aspects of religion. These cover a wide variety of topics, including the role of the church in contemporary society, developments in bioethics and arguments for the existence of God. Students also develop key transferable skills, such as considering different viewpoints and expressing their opinions to influence others.

The qualification is available as a Full Course and a Short Course. Full Course students complete two units and Short Course students complete one unit. For possible unit combinations, see the full specification.
