Coursework

There are three compulsory coursework units: one at AS and two at A2. For each coursework unit, students must complete an internally assessed practical project, which we moderate. All coursework must be submitted during the summer semester.

The three coursework units are outlined below:

Unit 2 AS 2 - Product Development Duration Weighting Season
  • Students must select a topic from the published list of themes and analyse a product or system.
  • They must submit a combination of written and graphical work on up to 10 A3 sheets.
  • They must develop a model or prototype that represents the practical outcome of the product or system analysis.
  • This unit is marked out of a total of 80.

Unit 4 A2 1 - In Depth Study: Designing Duration Weighting Season
  • Students are required to identify a problem or need involving the design of a technological product or system.
  • The topic for Unit 4’s coursework is left to the student, but it is essential that it provides sufficient scope to meet the assessment criteria. Students must also ensure that the topic chosen for Unit 4 can, once developed into a coherent design proposal, be realised in Unit 5 and meet the assessment criteria.
  • Students must produce a folio of design work in A3 format, comprising not more than 30 single-sided sheets. These should contain a combination of graphics and text.
  • There are 90 marks available for this unit (scaled to 60 for reporting).
