There are three compulsory examinations for GCE Technology and Design: two at AS and one at A2. Each takes the form of a written examination paper, which students can sit in either the summer or winter.

Additional detail on each exam is outlined below:

Unit 1 AS 1 Product Design and Practice: Materials, Components and their Uses


Exam Format & Details Duration Weighting
  • Students must answer 11 questions in total, which are marked out of 60.
  • Q1 is a product analysis question and is worth 20 marks. A3 sheets are provided for students. Where sketching is required, students should use 2D and 3D representations, rendering and annotation.
  • Q2 – Q11 are short questions and will assess the remaining content in the unit.

Unit 3 AS 3 Systems and Control: Industrial and Commercial Practices

Unit 6 A2 3 Systems and Control in Product Design


Exam Format & Details Duration Weighting
  • This paper is marked out of 80.
  • Questions draw on knowledge and skills acquired in other units.
  • There are three sections in this paper, all of which are marked out of 40.
  • Section A is a compulsory question and students must select either Section B or C.
  • Section A consists of one generic design question based on a theme.
  • Section B consists of 2 questions and examines electronic and microelectronic control systems in product design.
  • Section C consists of 2 questions and examines pneumatic and mechanical control systems in product design.
