Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What grades are available at GCE Technology and Design?
A. Both the AS and the full GCE Advanced Level are awarded on a five-grade scale: A, B, C, D and E. Candidates who fail to reach the minimum standard for a Grade E are recorded as U (unclassified) and do not receive an AS or A Level certificate. The results of individual assessment units are reported. Where AS certification is not requested, a candidate going on to complete the full A Level must complete all the assessment units required for the AS award.
Q. How is it assessed?
A. Students must take three compulsory modules for AS Level Technology and Design. Units 1 and 3 are assessed by a written examination paper, each lasting 1½ hours. Unit 2 is a coursework unit, which is internally assessed and externally moderated.

Students undertaking the full A Level must take the three AS units and three A2 units. Units 4 and 5 are coursework units, which are internally assessed and externally verified. Unit 6 is assessed via a 2 ½ hour examination paper.

Q. Can students resit modules?
A. Students may retake units more than once. When an entry is made for certification, the best attempt counts towards the final award.
Q. Are there any prohibited combinations?
A. In any one series of examinations, a candidate may not take an examination on this specification together with:
  • an examination at AS or A2 Level on another specification of the same title; or
  • an examination on specification with the title Technology and Design: Systems and Control Technology.
