Candidate Record Sheet (AS Unit 2)
(PDF), Last Updated: 04 November 2011

There are two compulsory coursework modules: one at AS and one at A2. For each coursework unit, students must complete an internally assessed practical project, which we moderate. All coursework must be submitted during the summer examination series.

The two coursework units are described in the table below:

AS 2: Product Development Description Duration Weighting
This module is based on a coursework assignment. It draws on the knowledge and skills covered in Unit AS 1. Students must analyse an existing product with a view to redesigning it or an aspect of it. Students must produce:
  • a 3-dimensional model or proto-type that represents the practical outcome of the product analysis and development; and
  • a portfolio (of no more than 10 A3 sheets) containing written and graphical support material.

In carrying out this coursework assignment, students should have opportunities to complete the following steps:

Investigation and Analysis of Product

  • Explore a range of existing similar products.
  • Examine function, purpose and design features.
  • Identify relevant materials and industrial production methods.
  • Evaluate fitness for purpose.
  • Provide detailed analysis of ergonomic and aesthetic suitability.

Re-design Solutions and Development

  • Write a re-design specification.
  • Generate a range of design modifications.
  • Evaluate the viability of each development.
  • Present a plan for manufacture.
  • Produce working drawings for manufacture.

Manufacture

  • Realise a 3-dimensional outcome in a range of materials.
  • Demonstrate a range of production skills and processes.
  • Record any changes in design developments brought about during manufacture.

Testing and Evaluation

  • Test systems and products against appropriate criteria.
  • Analyse testing outcomes and consider further developments and modifications.

AS 2: Product Development Description Duration Weighting

This module is based around a coursework assignment. It draws on the knowledge and skills covered in all the units but must reflect the chosen option in A2 1.

Students must design and manufacture a technological product or system. The technological product must have an energy source to make it function and include a control system comprising input, process and output.

Students must also produce a portfolio (of no more than 20 A3 sheets) containing written and graphical support material.

In carrying out this coursework assignment, students should have opportunities to complete the following steps:

Identification of a Problem, Need and Specification

  • Explore a range of problems and needs in a range of design contexts.
  • Consider a range of design briefs.
  • Generate design specifications.

Initial ideas, appraisal and selection

  • Through a range of research methods identify and analyse existing solutions.
  • Explore a range of control methods relevant to the design and development of new appropriate solutions.
  • Evaluate and appraise proposed ideas and solutions.

Development

  • Develop using appropriate methods, control systems and product outcomes.
  • Present formal working drawing to support manufacture.
  • Consider production and planning for manufacturing.

Manufacture

  • Realise systems in product outcomes.
  • Use a range of tools, equipment and develop manufacturing skills.
  • Record any changes in design developments brought about during manufacture.

Testing and Evaluation

  • Test systems and products against appropriate criteria.
  • Analyse testing outcomes and consider further developments and modifications.
