Students at St Mary’s, Limavady were thrilled as a Royal Navy helicopter landed in the grounds of their school.
CCEA has been encouraging employers and schools to work together in preparation for the introduction of Education for Employability which becomes part of the school curriculum in September. This was a shining example.
Cecil Holmes, Principal Officer, CCEA, who was delighted by the event commented,
“This is exactly what Education for Employability needs – enthusiastic teachers and willing organisations. The benefits of working together are clearly visible through the reactions of the students.
They’ve learnt so much today from the Royal Navy about determination, dedication, communication and much more. Hearing it from the people who live it makes it real”
Brenda Deery, Careers’ Co-ordinator at St Mary’s organised the event and was delighted by its success;
“It’s important that students stretch themselves and think outside the box. Our aim is to encourage them to be creative, innovative, take calculated risks and be more aware of employability issues.
The helicopter visit has been inspirational. They learned about careers within the Royal Navy, the jobs associated with manufacturing helicopters, the skills required and more.”
Nigel Kane, Assistant Regional Recruitment Officer, Northern Ireland for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines added;
“Today’s helicopter visit is part of a schools programme run by the Royal Navy that teaches pupils life skills. These skills are required not only for working in the Navy but are relevant in all areas of work such as leadership and team building.
Education for Employability is the groundwork that will put young people in the best possible position as they embark on their future careers and we need to support that.”
EmployabilityFEST is a 2 week event which will be launched on Monday 14th May. Schools and employers across Northern Ireland will be working together towards the Employability Agenda.
