Progression

Employability is one of the elements underpinning the curriculum objectives and as such should not be seen as additional or as a bolt on to the curriculum. Instead, it is best viewed as an underpinning theme that when infused into everyday learning and teaching provides a new and exciting dimension for learners.

In designing curriculum materials the objectives of the curriculum should be considered from the outset. By asking the question: ‘In what way does this learning support the development of:

  • individuals?’
  • contributors to society?’
  • contributors to the economy and environment?’

To support schools in developing their young people as ‘contributors to the economy’, this guidance offers three dimensions for Employability that can be addressed in learning and teaching in the primary school. It suggests a progression framework that will be built upon as pupils move from primary into post-primary school.
