Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course for teachers

Monday 13 September 2010

CCEA’s latest Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course for teachers - Assessing Cross-Curricular Skills at Key Stage 3 - has been voted a big success by participating teachers.

In November 2009 and April 2010, over 600 teachers from 160 schools throughout Northern Ireland registered for the course which was designed specifically for teachers involved in the formal assessment of the Communication and Using Mathematics Cross-Curricular Skills. The course included an introductory workshop and an online course to assist with the development of subject specific assessment activities.

As a result of this successful course, a final limited series of workshops will now be run in April 2011. These workshops will focus on the development of English and Mathematics activities for Cross-Curricular Skills through online discussion within a group, which will last for three weeks (supported by skills mentors). Once the activities have been agreed by the group, the information will be posted on the online gallery as an invaluable school resource for Key Stage 3 teachers.

Some of the comments made by teachers in the November and April series include:

Delighted I can now construct or adapt tasks to incorporate levels. It will also be useful to have other samples in viewing gallery.

The workshop was very informative, interactive and set at a pace that was easy to follow.

It was great to share ideas about my subject.

An excellent opportunity to hear first hand about the activities for use in assessment.

Definitely help to clarify what teacher based assessment is.

I now understand what is expected and what work I need to do.
