Volcanic Ash Update
Wednesday 19 May 2010
CCEA is currently monitoring the extent of volcanic ash disruptions to air travel now that the summer examination series has started. In recent weeks it has become clear that air travel carries with it a significantly increased risk of passenger delays. It is vitally important that examination centres and candidates are aware that no GCE or GCSE examinations timetabled to take place between now and the end of June 2010 will be rescheduled. The risk of candidates missing important examinations should therefore be carefully considered when making decisions about travel.
CCEA has taken advice from the Joint Council on Qualifications (JCQ), which states that any candidate who misses an examination must meet the published criteria for Special Consideration as indicated in the JCQ publication, “Access Arrangements, Reasonable Adjustments and Special Consideration”.
The publication can be found here:
www.jcq.org.uk/attachments/published/538PDF
Candidates will not be eligible for Special Consideration if examinations are missed due to personal arrangements such as holiday and travel which conflict with the examinations timetable.
Should any issues arise that may affect a candidate’s ability to be in attendance for an examination, the examination centre (school/college) should be contacted in the first instance for guidance.
