EXAMINATIONS SHOULD GO AHEAD AS SCHEDULED

Northern Ireland's examinations body, the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) today issued guidance to schools and colleges regarding GCE examinations taking place this Friday 18 January. This guidance has been issued in response to the proposed ICTU stoppage due to take place that day.

In a fax message to the principals of all schools and colleges CCEA confirmed that Friday's examinations should go ahead as scheduled.

Dr Alastair Walker, Head of Education Services at CCEA said,

CCEA has been giving consideration to possible courses of action as a result of the stoppage called by the ICTU on Friday afternoon, in view of the GCE examinations that are timetabled to take place on that day.

We have spoken to some centres as well as other agencies involved and after reviewing a range of options, we have concluded that the examinations on Friday should take place as scheduled on the timetable.

CCEA has asked schools and colleges experiencing any problems on Friday to report the effect on the examinations to CCEA at the earliest opportunity and no later than Monday 21 January.

Dr Walker continued,

We will look carefully at the nature of the difficulties that centres may have experienced and decide on the best way of dealing with them. In doing so we will be as sympathetic as possible to the candidates concerned.

I hope that it will be possible to avoid any disruption to the examinations that these young people have been preparing for. If there is any way in which CCEA can assist we would encourage centres to let us know.
