CCEA HONOURS NORTHERN IRELAND’S TOP STUDENTS

Students who achieved the very highest levels of performance in this summer’s A level examinations got an early Christmas present today as Northern Ireland’s awarding body, the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA), held its annual GCE A level Top Candidate Award ceremonies.

Speaking at the event, CCEA Chief Executive Gavin Boyd said:

The young people here today are the top performing students in the highest performing region of the United Kingdom. Their achievement is truly remarkable. Through our annual award ceremonies CCEA is proud to celebrate and highlight their achievement. Well done to the students, their teachers and to their parents.

These young people are also unique in another way. In 2001 they were the first to complete the new AS levels and this year the A2s. The Curriculum 2000 reforms may have had their detractors, but there is no doubting the positive effect they have had on performance. This year the percentage of CCEA A level entries gaining the top grades rose to 33.3%, up five percentage points. The comparable national figure is 21%.

There are two ceremonies this year both taking place on Thursday 19 December at the Conference and Exhibition Centre, the CCEA Building, 29 Clarendon Road, Belfast. The morning ceremony will run from 10 am until 11.30 am. The afternoon ceremony will run from 1.30 pm until 3.00 pm
