Exams body expresses concern over possible disruption to GCE examinations

Following today's bomb alerts in Belfast, CCEA, Northern Ireland's examinations body, says it is very concerned at possible disruption to students sitting GCE examinations.

A spokesman for CCEA commented:

'As soon as we learnt of the situation this morning we immediately contacted those schools and colleges in the Belfast area who were sitting CCEA GCE A/AS examinations. At this time they are reporting little or no disruption to their exams.

CCEA has also been in touch with the PSNI to keep abreast of the situation as it develops.

We will stay in touch with schools and colleges throughout the day and continue to monitor the situation. CCEA is determined to ensure that no student is disadvantaged by any disruption they might face today. As always our aim will be to reward students for their hard work and as such we will be working hand in hand with schools and colleges to ensure fair treatment for all.'

If pupils are disrupted a number of contingency measures are already built into the system to address such disruption. CCEA will deal with each case on an individual basis. Our chief aim in all cases will be to ensure that students are not disadvantaged in any way by today's events.

The following examinations are being sat by students today:

This morning – GCE AS examinations in Chemistry, Economics (2 papers) and ICT
This afternoon – GCE A2 Mathematics and Geography.

This morning 196 pupils at 10 schools and colleges in the Belfast area were due to sit exams. In Northern Ireland overall, 1,164 pupils sat this morning's exams.
This afternoon 10 pupils at 4 schools and colleges in the Belfast area were due to sit exams. In Northern Ireland overall, 79 pupils at 14 schools and colleges were due to sit these exams this afternoon.
