True Colours of CCEA students shine at the Waterfront Hall

Some of Northern Ireland’s brightest young artists and designers gathered at Belfast’s Waterfront Hall today to celebrate the opening of the ‘true colours’ exhibition, which will run until 23 January.

‘True colours’, which is sponsored by First Trust Bank, is an exhibition of the best work produced by GCSE and GCE art students for the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) 2003 Art and Design examinations.

Speaking at the opening event, CCEA Chief Executive Gavin Boyd commented:

‘This exhibition showcases the best work produced by some of our most talented young artists. Each year ‘true colours’ attracts over 7000 visitors, including a huge number of students who gain inspiration and an excellent insight into what it takes to gain top grades and have their own artwork exhibited in public. The remarkable standard of work on display today is testament to the outstanding creative talent of our young people. CCEA is proud to put on show the products of their hard work and artistic ability.’

The exhibition was opened by respected local artist Joe McWilliams, President of the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts and owner of Cavehill Gallery. Mr McWilliams said:

‘I am delighted to be here today in the presence of such gifted young people. Having been involved in art education for many years, I am thrilled to be involved in an event that celebrates and publicises the excellent standard of artwork being produced by Northern Ireland students. It is through these students, and the hard work and commitment of their teachers, that the high standard of visual arts in Northern Ireland will continue to flourish.’

Dennis Licence, Managing Director of First Trust Bank, who sponsor ‘true colours’, also commented:

‘First Trust Bank is proud to support 'true colours' and to help promote the excellent artwork being produced in Northern Ireland's schools and colleges. The quality of the work on display is evidence of the wealth of artistic flair possessed by our young people, the artists of tomorrow.’

The opening of ‘true colours’ coincides with the North of England Education Conference (NEEC), also being held in the Waterfront Hall from 7-9 January 2004.
