True Colours puts young artists in the frame

The work of some of Northern Ireland ’s brightest young artists and designers will be unveiled today at ‘True Colours’ in Belfast ’s Waterfront Hall.

Organised by the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment and sponsored by First Trust Bank, True Colours showcases the best and most interesting work from CCEA’s summer 2004 GCSE and GCE Art and Design examinations.

David Mulholland, Head of Corporate Services at CCEA, commented:

“True Colours is a unique and vibrant exhibition showcasing the outstanding artwork being produced in Northern Ireland schools and colleges. I would like to say congratulations to all the students whose work is exhibited and to their teachers who have encouraged them to make such good use of their artistic ability.

CCEA is delighted to be able to provide an outlet for the exceptional talent of these young artists and I’m sure they are very proud to see their work displayed in such a public setting.

Since it began in 1999 True Colours has become one of the highlights of the education calendar, attracting over 7000 visitors each year. Amongst these are thousands of students who gain a valuable insight into what it takes to achieve top grades in GCSE and GCE Art and Design. I hope that visiting True Colours will inspire and motivate them to return next year to view their own work hanging on these walls.”

Sara O’Sullivan, Manager for the Student Graduate Market at First Trust Bank, also commented:

“First Trust Bank is proud to support True Colours and to help promote the excellent artwork being produced in Northern Ireland 's schools and colleges. The quality of the work on display is evidence of the wealth of artistic flair possessed by our young people, the artists of tomorrow.”

True Colours will be opened by respected political cartoonist Ian Knox, who commented:

“This exhibition is deeply depressing for me, how can people so young be so good? The quality and range of work on display here gives lie to the stereotypical caricature of Northern Ireland people as being essentially non-visual. However we end up, we start with the same potential as people everywhere. The students whose work features here are, through their own hard work and the insightful guidance of their teachers, already well on their way to fulfilling an amazing potential. I am highly flattered at being asked to open this exhibition.”

True Colours will run in the Waterfront Hall from Monday 1 st until Friday 26 th November between the hours of 9.30am and 5pm . Admission is free.
