A musical meeting of minds at Score

Some of Northern Ireland ’s brightest young musicians will gather at the NTL Studio in Belfast ’s Waterfront Hall tonight for ‘Score’, a musical extravaganza showcasing the best and most entertaining performances and compositions from CCEA’s summer 2004 GCSE and AS level music examinations.

Score, now in its tenth year, is organised by the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment and supported by Dawsons Music. Featuring everything from jazz bands to classical soloists and bodhráns to lambeg drums, Score is a true celebration of Northern Ireland ’s outstanding and diverse young musical talent.

Gavin Boyd , Chief Executive of CCEA, commented:

“I am looking forwarded to welcoming these young performers here tonight for what has become one of the highlights of the education calendar. Score is a truly wonderful event, giving talented young people the opportunity to perform in front of their friends, family and teachers. We will all be extremely proud to watch them take to the stage.

Score 2004 is possibly one of the most diverse concerts we have staged yet. Amongst this evening’s highlights is a unique performance by two young men playing the bodhrán and the lambeg drum. I’m very much looking forward to listening to them bring together two sides of our culture through music.

A contemporary Celtic folk group will provide a modern take on well-known traditional pieces, whilst classical instrumentalists, solo singers and a rock band who have already recorded their first album also feature in the line-up.

This evening’s concert is truly a meeting of musical minds, styles and cultures, and I’m sure everyone involved will leave with a new-found appreciation for the outstanding musical talent and creativity being that is being nurtured in our schools.”

Score is sponsored by Dawsons Music, one of the UK ’s biggest educational music suppliers, who have just been voted ‘Best UK Multiple Retailer’ by the Music Industry Association. Earlier this year, Dawsons were also appointed exclusive supplier of musical instruments to all the Education and Library Boards in Northern Ireland .

UK Education Manager William Thompson said:

“We have been supplying Ulster schools for many years, but we are very pleased to be able to extend our unique levels of service and expertise to many more schools. We are particularly keen to support those schools that are being rebuilt or refurbished – our team of experts are able to advise on everything from acoustics through music ICT to building layout.”

Score will take place tonight, Friday 15 October, in the NTL Studio at Belfast ’s Waterfront Hall.
