GCSE examination goes ahead as scheduled, says CCEA

Northern Ireland's examinations body, the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) has issued guidance to schools and colleges regarding the CCEA GCSE Single Award Science examination taking place on Friday 13 May 2005. This guidance, issued last Friday, is in response to the recent announcement that NIPSA and Unison members in Education and Library Boards will take strike action on that day.

In a fax message sent to the principals of all schools and colleges CCEA confirmed that this Friday’s examination should go ahead as scheduled.

Examinations and Assessment Manager at CCEA Martin Quinn said:

“3,291 students at 118 examination centres are due to take this Friday’s Single Award Science examination. It is essential that these young people are not disrupted or distracted in any way.

As soon as Friday’s industrial action was confirmed we reviewed a range of options for this examination and other GCSE moderation activity taking place on 13 May. We’ve concluded that examination and moderation activities should go ahead as scheduled. This has been communicated to schools and colleges.

From the feedback we’ve had from schools and colleges this week, it is clear that they too want these important examinations to go ahead as normal.

CCEA GCSE Examination and Moderation Activity Friday 13 May 2005
