EXAMS BODY CALLS ON NEW RECRUITS

Northern Irelands exams body, CCEA, today launched its biggest ever recruitment campaign to encourage teachers and other suitably qualified individuals to join its team of professional markers and examiners.

The move is part of a major investment initiative aimed at bringing Northern Ireland ’s exam system into the 21 st century.

“We’re calling on teachers or other suitably qualified individuals to come and join our team of exam specialists. They will receive excellent training, gain insight into what it takes to get the top grades and be able to earn additional money as well, said CCEA spokesperson, Martin Quinn .

He continued:

Few people appreciate the sheer scale of the operation that takes place each summer to ensure Northern Ireland ’s students receive their grades in August. Over just eight weeks CCEA examiners and markers process three quarters of a million scripts and finalise close to a quarter of a million grades.

This is a mammoth task requiring great dedication and is carried out to the highest levels of professionalism. In recognition of this work and essential role they play CCEA has now increased the fees paid to examiners and markers.”

The Northern Ireland Examinations Modernisation Project

CCEA has secured funding from the Department of Education to implement an examinations modernisation process in Northern Ireland .

The project will involve two phases over a three year period:

Phase 1:

  • Focus on examiner recruitment and retention and the training and support of Exams Officers in schools.
  • Creation of a ‘Convergence Blueprint’ to ensure that centres obtaining services from several Awarding Bodies will find it no more difficult than dealing with only one.

Phase 2:

  • Focus on the development on ICT in the script-handling process in order to ensure maximum efficiency in the examining system.
