“Little Acorns” - Planting the seeds of Enterprise Education

The “Little Acorns” Initiative which plants the seeds of Enterprise Education in Northern Ireland ’s Primary School pupils has got the thumbs up with teachers from primary schools in the West Belfast and Greater Shankill area.

Teachers participating in the course organised by CCEA, the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment, developed skills to foster an Enterprise approach to learning and teaching in Year 3 and Year 4. Enterprise Education addresses one of the three dimensions of Education for Employability, one of the elements underpinning CCEA’s revised Northern Ireland Primary Curriculum objectives.

CCEA representative Melanie Mulligan , Primary Curriculum Development comments:

“Enterprising activities equip pupils with a ‘can do’ attitude and provide a range of valuable opportunities to improve their self confidence and self esteem.

The aim of Enterprise Education and Education for Employability is to ensure that all young people develop the personal qualities, skills, knowledge, understanding and attitudes which will give them a strong foundation for lifelong learning and work.

Feedback from the course was very positive, all teachers stated in the evaluation that following the two days they were ‘confident’ or ‘very confident’ about implementing an Enterprise approach in their classroom.”

To mark the success of the “Little Acorns” Enterprise Initiative, each school was presented with a framed certificate of participation during a celebration event in the Springvale Millennium Centre.
