Local teachers cooking up success with Hospitality Gurus

Local teachers have been cooking up success with Hospitality gurus. It’s all part of an innovative Hospitality Seminar developed by CCEA, the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment and the Northern Ireland Tourism Training Trust (TTT).

The Hospitality Insight Seminar provided GCSE teachers with an opportunity to hear front-line practitioners give ‘up-to-the-minute’ accounts of their work in the local Hospitality Sector.

Presentations were made by Mr Mathew Powell, Executive Chef, Malmaison Hotel; Ms Nicola McGarry, Training Manager, Botanic Inns; Ms Siobhan Mulvenna, Training Manager, Campbell Catering; Ms Stephanie Berkeley, Marketing Manager W5 and Mr James McGinn, General Manager, Europa Hotel. Mr McGinn also led the delegates on a tour of the Europa.

Chris Tracey , CCEA Principal Officer for Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism explained the rationale behind the seminar:

“What we are doing here today is giving teachers of Hospitality an opportunity to hear at first hand from industry experts the skills and attributes young people will need, to succeed in the Hospitality sector.

Robert McKenna from the Training Tourism Trust comments:

“In Northern Ireland there are approximately 50,400 hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism employees, 22 percent of this workforce do not have any qualifications. The sector is characterised as suffering from a relatively low skill shortages and high levels of skills gaps. In order develop a strong, dynamic and enterprising hospitality industry in Northern Ireland ; teachers need to be encouraging and enthusing young learners to study towards hospitality qualifications.”
