4.1 What is a uniform mark scale?
It is a scale used to smooth out the small variations in the demand of the assessment units sat by candidates in different examination series during their GCE and GCSE studies.
For example, the level of difficulty of a particular assessment unit test may vary slightly from session to session. Where this happens the grade boundaries for a January assessment unit examination may be slightly different from those set for the corresponding May/June assessment unit examination.
In order to allow a fair aggregation of the results of different assessment unit tests taken in a different exam series, it has been agreed that results will not be reported as raw marks but will be given as uniform marks. This standardises assessment unit test results and allows an overall grade to be computed by aggregation of the uniform mark.
