Spec changes... CCEA are changing their subject specifications
Stretch and Challenge
In 2007, we revised the current GCE A Level specifications for first teaching in 2008. A key part of these revisions was a QCA-mandated requirement to introduce ‘stretch and challenge’ to A2 assessments.
Stretch and challenge:
- allows students the opportunity to demonstrate the full extent of their knowledge and skills;
- prepares students better for the skills required in higher education and employment;
- emphasises the development of thinking and problem-solving skills to help motivate learners;
- incorporates synoptic assessment to test understanding as a whole; and
- requires extended writing to enable students to demonstrate a breadth of knowledge and understanding.
This summer, candidates will receive the first full awards of the revised A Levels. Achievement on ‘stretch and challenge’ will be recognised, rewarded and reported through an additional A* grade. The A* grade is awarded to candidates who achieve an overall grade ‘A’ for A Level (AS and A2 combined) and who also excel in their A2 examinations.
