Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment

Examinations

Students must complete two written exams for GCSE Biology: one for Unit 1 and one for Unit 2. The exams are available at both Foundation Tier and Higher Tier.

The Unit 1 exam is worth 35 percent of the final award. It lasts 1 hour 15 minutes at Foundation Tier and 1 hour 30 minutes at Higher Tier.

The Unit 2 exam is worth 40 percent of the final award. It lasts 1 hour 30 minutes at Foundation Tier and 1 hour 45 minutes at Higher Tier.

The exams include a number of compulsory structured questions. These provide students with opportunities for short answers, extended writing and calculations.

Unit 1 is available every summer from 2012, and Unit 2 is available every summer from 2013.

We set and mark the exams.
