The internal assessment is worth 20% of the A level and involves an in-depth comparative study of two novels. One of these must be a twenty-first-century novel. The comparison novel can be from any time period. The student and teacher agree the theme for the essay.

Students must not use the AS 2 novels in this unit. The novels can be by the same or different authors. See Appendix 3 in the specification for a list of suggested themes and novels. Centres must seek approval to study other appropriate novels or themes in this unit.

The essay has a maximum word limit of 2500 words. Students must submit a bibliography with the essay. The essay should address all assessment objectives.
