Frequently Asked Questions

Do learners need to have prior knowledge of the subject area?

Learners do not need to have prior knowledge of geography to undertake this course.

How many hours are needed to teach and assess this qualification?

A total of 120 guided learning hours (GLH) is the approximate number of hours needed for teacher-directed learning time and assessment. Learners complete six units and each unit has 20 GLH.

How prescriptive is the Entry Level Geography specification?

Learners must complete two mandatory physical geography and two mandatory human geography units. They may select one of the remaining two options for both physical and human geography making six units in total.

How long does the course last?

The course can be completed in either one or two years. However, learners who need additional time may complete the six units within the lifetime of the specification.

Do learners need to complete all units at the same level?

No, learners donít need to complete all units at the same level. Please refer to the Scheme of Assessment Section 4.7 in the specification for more details.

Is practical work such as fieldwork, essential for this qualification?

Learners must provide evidence to show that they have fully met the assessment criteria. Each unit provides opportunities to develop knowledge and understanding in a practical context; however, this is not compulsory.

What material needs to be sent to the moderator?

The dates for submission will be detailed in the calendar of events set out in our Qualifications Administration Handbook.At the end of the course, the following items should be sent to the moderator:

  • the Class Record Sheet (signed/dated by the teacher), with the total candidature for the centre, listed in alphabetical order. An asterisk should be placed beside those learners whose coursework has been submitted to the moderator;
  • the samples of the learners'; work for the portfolios.'; Each sample of work for moderation must be accompanied by a completed Candidate Record Sheet;
  • the coursework submission sheet which allows schools to give additional relevant information for the moderator.

When should assessments be submitted to CCEA?

Teacher assessment can take place as and when the learner is ready. Centres may submit the assessment outcomes samples for external moderation beginning in Summer 2016. The dates for submission will be detailed in the calendar of events set out in our Qualifications Administration Handbook.

How is achievement at unit level awarded?

Achievement at unit level is pass or not passed.
