Background details

Hardy shared the common interest in what was then called ‘natural history’. In the 19th century, the relationship between man and nature was re-evaluated.

What the poem is about

The poem evokes sympathy for small unobtrusive creatures. The poem depicts the meeting of man and four insects as a meeting of five equals.
